Abstract

The superdense glow, a diffuse, high-current density low-pressure gas discharge, has found application as the conduction mechanism in high-currrent closing switches and rectifiers, especially in the Russian research into pulsed power generation.

A characterization of the superdense glow will be given in comparison to the well-known types of glow discharges, including the hollow-cathode glow discharge.

The main fields of application of the superdense glow are the repetitive switching of high-voltage, high-current pulses, and as an intense source of charged particles. Some of the most important developments are presented. A critical assessment of the superdense glow is made as far as possible.
