Abstract
The optics of living tissue are complicated by gross and microscopic inhomogeneous structure, dynamic changes in blood content, shape, multiple absorbing compounds, and extreme local and individual variations. This degree of complexity is necessary for life itself, and presents both the major challenge for diagnostic optical techniques and a major justification for developing noninvasive techniques.
