Abstract
The use of UVA (315–400 nm) tanning technology has increased markedly over the last 5 years in Western societies. The UVA tanning industry tends to claim, or imply, that a UVA tan is a safe tan when compared with a natural suntan. This paper proposes to examine the validity of this claim. Before any assessment on the safety of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the skin can be made it is necessary to distinguish between short-term effects and long-term consequences.
