Genetic Manipulation of Bacillus Thuringiensis Insecticidal Crystal Protein Genes in Bacteria

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Genetic Engineering ((GEPM,volume 13))

Abstract

The majority of sales of all biological pest control products worldwide are of the bacterial agent, Bacillus thuringiensis, or BT as it is commonly known. BT is a ubiquitous soil microorganism that is distinguished from other soil-inhabiting bacilli by its ability to produce proteinaceous crystalline inclusions upon sporulation. The protein(s) which comprise the inclusions, sometimes referred to as delta-endotoxin(s), are toxic when ingested by susceptible insects. During commercial production, a mixture of BT spores and crystals are concentrated following fermentation and then formulated for spray-on application according to conventional agricultural practices.
