Abstract
The concept that mechanical forces can influence the composition and structure of tissues is common to many areas of physiology and developmental biology. Metabolism in many tissues is affected by physical stress, and the tissue response is generally anabolic in nature. Perhaps the most familiar example of such a response is the effect of exercise on skeletal muscles. However, analogous responses in other tissues have also been described. These tissues include cardiac muscle2–5, bone6,7 and cartilage8,9. Our laboratory has been investigating the nature and mechanism of the response of large arteries to such physical stresses.
