Abstract
Daniel Israel Arnon was born on November 14, 1910 in Warsaw, Poland. He emigrated to the United States at an early age, and came to study under D.R. Hoagland at the University of California. In 1936 he received his Ph.D. on “The role of trace elements in nitrogen metabolism of plants.” Before becoming a photobiologist, he also made other contributions to the science of plant nutrition and the roles of metals in plants. Most importantly he discovered that vanadium is an essential element for the growth of the green alga Scenedesmus. We now know that vanadium is necessary also for other plants.
