Abstract

We have used a rapid experiment developed in our laboratory providing an estimate of pyrimidine dimer excision repair in vivo in bacterial strains. It is based on the detection of the remaining dimers in a plasmid after UV irradiation and post-incubation of the host cells. We have shown that Streptococcus pneumoniae which is naturally deficient in photoreactivation and some SOS-like functions, has the capacity to carry out excision repair when exposed to UV light.

The analysis of the repair abilities and sensitivities to UV irradiation and chemical agents in the wild type and UV sensitive derivative strains, indicates that UV-induced pyrimidine dimers might be repaired through a system similar to the uvr-dependent system in Escherichia coli.
