Abstract

The fate of pollutants released into the environment is governed by complex systems. Acid deposition is governed by such a system. It consists of a large number of interacting processes, which include gas-phase and aqueous-phase chemistry of the relevant pollutants, meteorology, cloud physics, and the dry and wet scavenging of pollutants. Each of these processes is itself very complex. For example, the gas-phase chemistry that leads to the formation of sulfuric and nitric acids from their precursors, SO2 and NOx, involves at least 100 reactions among 50 species. Ideally, a model of the acid deposition system would incorporate all our understanding of the component processes. In practice, this is not possible for a number of reasons, the most important of which are the large manpower and the computational resources required to develop such a model.
