Abstract

Following the Chernobyl reactor accident, the German Weather Service (DWD) is bound by national legislation to perform air pollution forecasts in case of accidental releases of radioactivity involving long-range transport of contaminants. As part of the national radioactive monitoring and alert system (IMIS), a Lagrangian particle dispersion model (LPDM) was chosen due to physical and numerical advantages.
