Abstract

Charge density in crystalline solids reflects the distribution of electrons in this solid. Neutrons, however, are essentially scattered by the nucleus of an atom. At a first glance it seems therefore slightly puzzling to include neutron scattering into a course on charge densities. In fact there are two areas where neutrons contributed considerably to the experimental evidence now available on charge densities (i) precise determination of charges by the X-N method introduced by Phil Coppens about twenty years ago (ii) direct observation of the distribution of magnetic moments in the outer shells of transition elements by polarized neutron techniques.
