Abstract
The selectivity of, and flux in, tight polymer membranes are strongly affected by the solubility of the permeating compounds in the membrane material. Prediction of solubility requires a reliable theoretical equation, for which the Flory-Huggins50, 51 equation is usually applied. This equation relates the entropy of mixing to polymer size and composition and is derived by calculating the number of possible configurations by filling the sites of an imaginary lattice with constant coordination number Z successively with polymer molecules occupying m sites each and solvent molecules occupying single sites.
