Abstract

The measured fluxes and selectivities in various pervaporation and reverse osmosis experiments have been plotted versus permeation time in Figs. 22 and 23. The fluxes increased with time probably due to swelling and partial dissolution of crystallites in the polymer. Without pretreatment, more than a week was required to reach steady-state conditions at room temperature (see Fig. 22). However, on preswelling this time was reduced dramatically as is shown in Fig. 23 for reverse osmosis. Here preswelling was carried out at elevated temperature (45°C) in n-heptane.
