Abstract
This chapter describes the animals and plants that live in the pelagic environment. It begins by describing the phyto- and zooplankton, primary production and pelagic food webs. We then consider environmental seasonal and geographical effects on the abundance and productivity of the plankton, and follow this by an account of plankton patchiness and indicator species. The last part of the chapter covers neuston, pleuston and nekton, bathy- and abyssopelagic animals, and whales and sea birds.
