Dislocation Structures in Metallic Single Crystals Grown from the Melt

  • Chapter
Growth of Crystals

Part of the book series: Growth of Crystals ((GROC,volume 17))

Abstract

Possible sources of dislocations and other imperfections in single crystals grown from the melt were discussed about 30 years ago. These sources are: 1) stacking faults and stresses at the interface; 2) stresses caused by inhomogeneous temperature or impurity distribution, as well as inclusions of a second phase or the vessel; 3) thermally nonequilibrated vacancies (or intrinsic interstitial atoms); and 4) small-angle boundaries and dislocations from the seed.
