Abstract
The basic consideration of this symposium is “fact and fiction in Transfusion Medicine”. This basic consideration has been given a special meaning by the words Graham Greene wrote in his novel “Monsignor Quixote”: “Facts and fictions: they are not always easy to distinguish” [1]. When there exists common agreement on the “truth” of a statement this will not automatically include whether it is a fact or a fiction. Man can agree or disagree both on the perceived truth of statements and define them as facts or as fictions. What is a fact for the one does not automatically mean a fact to the other, it might as well be a fiction. It would take another symposium to grasp the full philosophical meaning of the notions mentioned. Still it will be the question whether the full range of the concepts and their interaction will be completely understood.
