Abstract
The World Health Organization (WHO) has promoted training of health care professionals working in blood transfusion services (BTSs) for more than 20 years. Thus, it has promoted the establishment and development of local programs by providing technical assistance and by facilitating the provision of the necessary resources. This has been supplemented by the organization of training courses and production of training documents and other training materials. Table 1 lists some of the characteristics of the training courses organized by the responsible unit at WHO Headquarters between 1978 and 1990 in which serological techniques, storage of blood and blood products, quality assurance and management have been the most prominent topics. It should be pointed out that similar training courses have also been organized by the Regional Offices and also at the country level.
