Abstract

Adenocarcinoma of the prostate is currently the number one malignancy in men in the United States and the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths [1]. In part because of these sobering statistics, there has been increasing interest in curative therapy. Radical prostatectomy is emerging as the preferred therapeutic approach for a number of reasons. If neoplasm is organ confined, surgical extirpation offers the best chance of cure. Moreover, increasing evidence suggests that definitive radiation therapy is rarely able to sterilize the prostate [2]. Finally, technical advances have made radical retropubic prostatectomy more acceptable because of decreased morbidity.
