The use of adjuvant therapy in patients treated with conservative surgery and radiotherapy

Adjuvant Therapy of Breast Cancer

Part of the book series: Cancer Treatment and Research ((CTAR,volume 60))

Abstract

Until recently, the critical issue regarding breast-conserving therapy for patients with early-stage invasive breast cancer was whether it could yield survival equal to mastectomy. This has now been demonstrated in several randomized prospective trials [15]. As discussed in earlier chapters, the value of adjuvant systemic therapy in the management of at least some subsets of these patients has now been widely accepted. These two developments have resulted in many patients being treated with both breast-conserving therapy and adjuvant systemic therapy.
