Culture Conditions Affect Expression of the α6β4 Integrin Associated with Aggressive Behavior in Head and Neck Cancer

  • Chapter
The Biology and Prevention of Aerodigestive Tract Cancers

Abstract

Prevention of disease has always been more effective than treatment. Sanitation practices and vaccines have eliminated many of the most dreaded and lethal diseases of man and domestic animals. Cancer, a devastating disease caused by unregulated growth of genetically altered cells, is as daunting a challenge today as smallpox was in Edward Jenner’s time two centuries ago. Fortunately, we are on the threshold of a new era in biology. We can now examine growth-regulatory mechanisms at the cellular and molecular levels, and we can begin to apply what we learn in new clinical and experimental systems.
