Abstract

In the yolk sac, vascular development begins with the formation of blood islands - groups of splanchnic mesodermal cells - before blood vessels appear in the body of the embryo. Whereas the inner cells of the blood islands differentiate into blood-forming cells, the outer cells give rise to vascular endothelium (for review see Romanoff, 1960). There are indications that the differentiation of extrae m bryonic endothelial cells requires controlling influences from the underlying endoderm (Miura and Wilt, 1969, 1970; Flamme, 1989).
