Localization of Endogenous Lectins during Early Chick Development

  • Chapter
Formation and Differentiation of Early Embryonic Mesoderm

Part of the book series: NATO ASI Series ((NSSA,volume 231))

Abstract

Our interest in studying the endogenous lectins from the early chick embryo, arose from previous work in which we found that mechanically dissociated cells from primitive streak chick blastoderms, were readily agglutinated by a variety of plant lectins. Among the plant lectins the galactose-specific Ricinus communis agglutinin (RCA), exhibited a strong agglutinating effect (Zalik and Cook, 1976, Phillips and Zalik, 1982). Ensuing from this work we decided to investigate whether the embryo contains endogenous lectins that could interact with the plant lectin receptors detected by cell agglutination.
