Summary

In a study of the properties of composites containing wood cellulose and thermoplastics, it was found that the strength and stiffness of these materials were significantly improved by the use of maleic anhydride-modified polypropylene (MAPP). The nature of adhesion was studied with FTIR, ESCA and SEM. The chemical bonding between MAPP and cellulose surfaces was proven to be responsible for promoting interracial adhesion.

The effect of cellulose fiber surface treatment on the crystallization and interphase morphology of cellulose-polymer composites was studies using polarizing microscopy.Diffrent nucleation patterns of the polyproylene matrix were observe, depending on the molecular structure of the coupling agent.

Prehydrolytic treatment of the cellulose was performed in attempts to improve the dispersibility of cellulose was performed in attemps to improve the dispersibility of cellulose in polymeric matrices. In this way, novel materials with excellent properties were manufactured from municipal waste.

Natural biological composites, with cellulose as reinforcement and bacteria-produced polyhydroxybutrate (PHB) as a matrix, were manufactured by compounding and injection molding. Such materials are totally biodegradable
