Abstract
It has been proposed that taurine has various biological functions such as influencing neurotransmitter release, stabilizing membranes, modulating Ca2+ fluxes, inhibiting protein phosphorylation, and regulating osmolarity (for reviews, see ref. 1 and 2). Up until recently, there has been no well-defined role for taurine at the molecular level, and thus the function of taurine in excitable tissues remained unclear. However, results from our laboratory indicate that taurine has an inhibitory effect on the phosphorylation of specific proteins in the retina3–5, brain6–8, and heart9.
