Abstract
One of the established actions of taurine is the modulation of myocardial contraction. Initial studies demonstrating this effect employed pharmacological doses of taurine to alter contractile function1–3. Although it was assumed that this action of taurine might represent a physiological function, only recently has evidence been obtained confirming this theory. Pion et al.4 reported in 1987 that cats fed a taurine deficient diet developed a cardiomyopathy. More recently, Steele et al.5 and Galler et al.6 found that taurine altered contractile function of skinned muscle fibers, a preparation in which the cell membrane is permeabilized, allowing changes in the intracellular milieu.
