Recent Thoughts on the Immunotherapy of Infectious Diseases Including HIV Infection

Microbial Infections

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 319))

Abstract

The treatment of infections with immunostimulating drugs has been termed by us a “prohost” approach since the therapy is designed to increase host resistance rather than directly kill the pathogen. The origins of this approach go back into history to the use of Chinese traditional herbal medicines to strengthen the host (“stimulate the yin”). At the turn of the century Metchnikoff advocated stimulating the phagocytes to enhance host resistance. More recently, vaccine development has been employed to specifically prepare the host for pathogen challenge.
