Abstract
Photochemical induction of thrombosis is an elegant technique (Watson et al., 1985) which is increasingly applied in order to produce reproducible focal cerebral infarctions. In this stroke model focal illumination of the brain cortex following intravenous injection of Rose Bengal, induces vascular thrombosis in the illuminated area, due to local production of singlet oxygen which causes endothelial damage. To date, attention has mainly been focussed on the evaluation of morphologic changes, alterations in local cerebral blood flow and metabolism, and functional deficits at certain time periods following photothrombotic infarction, induced by illumination of the brain through the intact skull in anesthetized rats.
