Abstract

By definition, active cerebral metabolic rate for oxygen (ACMRO2) is the oxygen consumption associated with the generation of spontaneous electrical activity.1 The balance, or basal CMRO2, is presumably, the oxygen consumed to maintain neuronal viability through ion pumping and reparative and synthetic metabolic pathways.2 This concept evolved out of interest in the mechanism of action of anesthetics and the hypothesis that the effect of anesthetics on cerebral metabolism is secondary to a direct effect on cerebral function.3
