The Physiologic Impact of Cardiac Surgery: The Nursing Perspective

  • Chapter
Book cover Cardiac Surgery

Abstract

Cardiac surgery has a profound impact on a patient’s physiology. Those who provide care for these patients pre and post operatively must be cognitive of these changes and provide adequate therapeutic interventions. What happens to the patient who enters the operating suite normothermic, anxious, and normotensive? Two to four hours later we care for a comatose, cold, clammy, edematous, hypertensive, tachycardiac patient. This chapter will explore the physiologic impact of cardiac surgery, specifically the areas of hypothermia, cardiopulmonary bypass and from the point of view of the type of surgical procedure.
