Abstract
While virtually all perfusionists have heard about extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and perhaps been tested on it as part of their certification exam, few have been directly involved with it until recently. It also only peripherally relates to cardiac surgery, but use of ECMO after open-heart surgery or as a bridge-to-transplantation represents a small but growing field. While ECMO is conceptually similar to the more familiar cardiopulmonary bypass practiced in the operating room, there are some fundamental differences.
