Cardiac Valve Replacement in The 1990s: The Nursing Perspective

Abstract

The cardiac surgical population, particularly those undergoing coronary artery bypass surgery (CABG) has changed significantly in the past decade. The explosion of interventional cardiology techniques and procedures has, in some cases, redefined the type of patient we see in the operating room, and Intermediate ICU, (step down units). Heart valve replacement and more recently valve repair, however, remains a compelling reason for undergoing open heart surgery. As in all other areas of health care, considerable research and development is taking place to improve the options and enhance patient outcomes. This chapter will review concepts and issues surrounding cardiac valve disease, surgical interventions to correct pathology and key nursing issues in managing patients post cardiac valve replacement/repair.
