Abstract

Oxygenation-deoxygenation state of Hb in living tissues has been measured by means of near-infrared (NIR) spectrophotometry. Several authors have examined quantitative analysis of Hb oxygenation in brain, skeletal muscle, and other organs by using 2- or 3-wavelength NIR spectrophotometry (Hazeki and Tamura, 1988; Wray et al., 1988) and multicomponent analysis of NIR spectra (Araki and Nashimoto, 1989). Measurement of spatial distribution of this parameter by NIR spectrophotometry, however, has not been established yet. We have measured 2-wavelength NIR projection images of the human forearm and obtained an image showing 2-dimensional distribution of Hb oxygenation state in vivo.
