Abstract

The highest incidence of cancer in American men, next to cancers of the skin and lung, is prostate cancer. Present estimates indicate that about one out of 11 American men will develop prostate cancer. In 1990 there were an estimated 106,000 new cases annually in the United States, and nearly one-third (30,000) of these patients died of the disease. In Japan, the age adjusted prostate cancer mortality rate is significantly lower (2 per 100,000) than in the U.S. (14 per 100,000). However, the incidence of occult or latent prostatic cancer is similar in both countries. In the following pages, data from both countries are reported which offer potential insight into the etiology and progression of prostate cancer in American and Japanese patients.
