Abstract

A description of the SAX Ground Segment is given from the point of view of its architecture and activities, together with a brief overview of the SAX mission.

The principal components of the SAX Ground Segment are the Operational Control Center, the Telemetry Tracking and Command Station and the Data Relay System. The core component of the system is the Control Center, where a powerful hardware and software configuration permits a real time response to the classical needs of telemetry, telecommand, ranging and tracking, attitude and orbit determination functions, and also serves to provide some interesting additional features. Among these, some singular scientific functionalities, such as observation scheduling, raw data archiving, scientific quick look, have to be performed in ‘almost real time’. The high performance level required strongly influences the architectural design.
