The Necessity of Stochastic Radiobiology in BNCT or What is the RBE of the 10B(n,α)7Li Reaction

Abstract

In radiation biology and in radiotherapy, the details of the interaction of ionizing radiation with biological matter is of great importance. With the advent of high-LET, short range particles such as those utilized in BNCT, a more thorough and detailed knowledge of these interactions is of even greater importance. It would be desirable to predict the response of a biological system (e.g. an organ in an organism) from basic principles derived in simpler systems. This deductive approach would be highly satisfactory.
