Abstract
By employing the Path Probability Method, the time evolution of the cluster probabilities for distinctive atomic (spin) configurations on an octahedron cluster during an isothermal aging process following a quenching operation is investigated. A certain cluster shows a peak in the course of the relaxation, although the free energy of the system decreases monotonically towards the equilibrium value. The thermodynamic origin of this non-monotonic behavior is discussed based on the kinetic path in a thermodynamic configuration space and in terms of an interplay between cooling rate and the spin flip probability.
