Abstract
Despite the contributions of iconoclasts such as Copernicus, Darwin, and more recently the cognitive psychologists (see, for example, Lakoff, 1988), it remains difficult to overcome the preconception that humans are somehow separate, special, and occupy the center of the universe. One consequence of this is that studies on human population biology and genetics do not seem to have an established place at the table of evolutionary biology—it appears that we can speak with greater confidence on the evolutionary forces governing the creation of powdery mildew and house sparrows. In this light we present an analysis of a large family-based survey of the people of France typed for the polymorphic loci which regulate the immune system.
What are these creatures, pretentiously reared up on their hind legs, looking down on the rest of creation? They have emerged from the same biological matrix as all the others, and yet seem to imagine themselves distinct. As an appropriate rebuke, we suggest putting them under the glass to thereby reveal evolutionary mechanisms operating in all of life.
