Abstract
Lead toxicity has been recognized since antiquity, and warnings about its neurotoxic properties have been issued throughout history. Recent advances in the neurotoxicology and epidemiology of lead exposure have drawn a clear picture of the extent and nature of the disease. It is now acknowledged that the consequences of exposure to lead constitute the most serious environmental problem of American children. It is also clear that this disease is totally preventable.
