Abstract
The hippocampal slice preparation is an extremely popular system for investigating synaptic transmission in the vertebrate brain, since it provides access to a wide variety of electrophysiological techniques while retaining considerable physiological integrity. This preparation is commonly used for the study of the cellular and molecular basis of forms of synaptic plasticity, such as those believed to underlie associative learning. The CA1 region, in particular, provides a convenient preparation where both excitatory and inhibitory synaptic mechanisms can be studied with a high degree of precision.
