Abstract

It is now possible to produce intense approximately Planckian X-ray pulses in the laboratory with high-power laser systems. These are currently of considerable interest as possible drives in inertial confinement fusion experiments. Also, they can be used for the production of uniform, gradient-free plasmas which cannot be produced by other means in the laboratory and which are ideal for the testing of theoretical calculations (of e.g. opacities and radiative transfer) relevant for laboratory as well as astrophysics research.1,2 Therefore, investigations of the interaction of intense soft-X-ray pulses with targets are important for the design of future experiments. In this paper we present the results of several experiments performed using the VULCAN laser at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, and designed to investigate the interaction of soft-X-ray pulses with low-Z planar targets.3,4,5
