Abstract

In this chapter the acute and chronic effects of alcohol on cardiac hemodynamics, electrophysiology, and metabolism and regional blood flow are reviewed. Alcoholic cardiomyopathy—the cardiac muscle disorder associated with alcohol abuse—is examined from a clinical and laboratory perspective. The relationship of alcohol use to atherogenesis and hypertension—which has important implications for stroke and heart attack—is also discussed.
