Blastomycosis in Animals

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Current Topics in Infectious Disease ((CTID))

Abstract

Infection with Blastomyces dermatitidis can be induced in a variety oflabora-tory animal species. Mice have been used extensively to study experimental infection. A number of different mouse models have been utilized.14 These models have demonstrated differences in virulence among strains of B. der-matitidis. 57 Murine blastomycosis has also been useful in studying the immune response of the host to the organism.8,9 Thymectomized mice10 and athymic nude mice11 have been used to evaluate the role of cell-mediated immunity in blastomycosis. Hamsters,1214 guinea pigs,15 and dogs16,17 have also been used to study blastomycosis.
