Abstract

In this chapter, the plan is to develop the semiclassical dynamical equations which describe time dependent light-matter interactions. The derivation presented in this chapter will assume that the medium is a simple atomic one with localized valence electrons which form a two-level system. In this sense, the derivation of this chapter will not apply per se to semiconductors, where the electrons are not localized. These restrictions, however, will be lifted in the following chapter, where attention will be directed toward semiconductor lasers.
