Causation and Bacterial Diseases

  • Chapter
Causation and Disease

Abstract

While the first postulates of causation are generally attributed to Robert Koch, his contributions, like most advances in science, rest on the work of others who preceded him, especially that of his teacher, Jakob Henle, and another great German bacteriologist, Edwin Klebs. The work of these three men will be reviewed in this chapter, and the applicability of the Koch postulates to several bacterial diseases will be discussed, including the pathogens of Legionnaire’s disease and Lyme disease.
