Abstract

There has been dramatic improvement in short pulse generation using solid state lasers over the past decade. This has been brought about by improvements in laser gain media, the advent of diode pumping of solid state lasers and the use of nonlinear processes to induce mode-locking. We have seen the reduction in pulse duration of conventional gain media such as Nd: YAG by over an order of magnitude, and new tunable materials such as Ti.Al 2 0 3 and Cr.LiSAF have been made to produce light pulses with durations well below 100fsec. I will describe some of the basic ideas and techniques which have been employed in reaching these new levels of pulse duration. These will be illustrated with descriptions of particular systems.
