Abstract

According to the Dictionary of Epilepsies of the World Health Organization (Gastaut, 1973), epilepsy is a chronic brain disorder of various aetiologies characterized by recurrent seizures due to excessive discharge of cerebral neurones. Single or occasional epileptic seizures as well as those provoked during an acute illness should not be classified as epilepsy. The two cardinal elements of this definition are the epileptic nature of the paroxysmal event and its repetition through time.
