Panel Discussion on Genes, Environment and Disease

Abstract

It is now generally understood that there is a wide spectrum of manifestations of ill-being, in general, and diseases, in particular. The spectrum varies from those which are familial to the others caused by infection, malnutrition and pollution. Most of the common and chronic systemic or degenerative diseases are located in the middle of the spectrum. Many of these diseases have variable ages of onset, variable types and magnitudes of expression, and show results of teratogenic or accidental causes. Deciphering the mechanisms and processes of manifestation of these diseases provide a challenging frontier, and coordinated research involving specialists with expertise in different disciplines would be required for substantial progress in this field.

D.P. Mukherjee and Amitabha Basu acted as the Chairman and the Coordinator, respectively, of the Panel Discussion.
