Abstract
Two thousand years ago viticulture was introduced into the Netherlands by the Romans. Since then there have been vineyeards in the surroundings of Maastricht, where the cretaceous soil and the microclimate are favorable for grape growing. Reglementation during the French occupation caused a temporary disappearance of these small vineyards, but recently some new ones have been installed on the slopes of Mount Saint Peter.
