Abstract
How to obtain images with sound hats been the subject of much effort for many years. The modern research started with the work of the French in underwater search during World I. Shortly thereafter many valid ideas were advanced by workers in many nations on how to produce various kinds of acoustic images. The several generic approaches to acoustic imaging can be categorized into one or the other of three key modalities: pulse-echo imaging, intensity mapping, and phase-amplitude techniques. Each of these categories can be combined with the others to produce hybrid instruments, some of which are among the most powerful in the acoustic imaging domain.
