Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 348))

Abstract

The evidence of the key role played by dietary habits on the frequency of the major killing chronic diseases, i.e. cancer and cardiovascular, indicates that the knowledge available on the relationship between diet and cancer needs to be interpreted in the light of data on cardiovascular disease. There are two main reasons for this: a) the possible common clues for the pathophysiology of cancerogenesis and atherosclerosis; b) the analysis of the possible benefits achievable in the general population through dietary preventive measures supposedly effective for both cancer and cardiovascular diseases.
