Mycoplasma Membrane Lipids Chemical Composition and Transbilayer Distribution

  • Chapter
Mycoplasma Cell Membranes

Part of the book series: Subcellular Biochemistry ((SCBI,volume 20))

Abstract

The goals of the present review are to summarize the Lipid composition of mycoplasmas and to analyze the results obtained about the transbilayer distribution of lipids in mycoplasma and acholeplasma cell membranes. Previous review articles have summarized the lipid composition of mycoplasma membranes (Smith, 1971, 1979; Razin, 1973; Rottem, 1980; McElhaney, 1984). The transbilayer distribution of mycoplasma lipids has also been reviewed (for the most recent reviews, see Rottem and Davis, 1986; Bittman, 1988). The present review gives the structures of the principal lipid components of mycoplasma membranes, including the structures of newly discovered lipids, and discusses data obtained on transbilayer distribution and movement of lipids in mycoplasmas since this topic was last reviewed.
